Lighthouse History

Black Rock Harbor USCGThe Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse Station was established in 1808 with a small octagonal wooden tower at the southern tip of Fayerweather Island. The current 41 foot rubble-stone and brownstone block tower was erected in 1823 after the original was destroyed in a gale. In 1854 a 5th order Fresnel lens was installed displaying a fixed white light that was visible for 11 nautical miles.
The Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse was deactivated in 1933 and then licensed to the City of Bridgeport. The lighthouse stood abandoned and vandalized until 1983 when it was restored by the Bridgeport Environmental Protection Commission and the Friends of Seaside Park. Fayerweather Island was also cleared of debris, landscaped and public paths and hiking trails were developed. Sadly, the vandalism continued and the tower was again in need of repair. In 1998, the Black Rock Seaport Foundation, affiliated with the Black Rock Community Council, initiated a full restoration of the tower including the use of graffiti resistant paint and solar lighting to illuminate the structure (the light itself remains inactive). Sadly, despite the community's efforts to keep Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse in pristine condition, vandals continue to make graffiti.

The Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse remains an attraction in Bridgeport's Seaside Park. The lighthouse and park are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Seaside Park National Register District. Lighthouse DigestJuly 2000 Issue, Fayerweather Island Lighthouse Brought Back To Life by Jeremy D'Entremont. "The old lighthouse tower on Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Fayerweather Island is known to some as Fayerweather (or Fairweather) Island Light, and to others as Black Rock Harbor Light. Whatever its name, the newly renovated lighthouse stands as a proud survivor of almost two centuries that have included decades of neglect and considerable vandalism. Add this one to the growing list of American lighthouses brought back to life by caring local residents." Please go to the Lighthouse Digest Magazine Archives to read this article. Lighthouse Digest magazine not only keeps the history of our lighthouses alive both in print and on line, but it is the best single source to keep current on all aspects of lighthouse preservation, news and events.

North- Eastbound Route I-95 also take exit 26 to Wordin Av at the first traffic signal. Continue straight onto the I-95 Northbound entrance. From the Northbound I-95 ramp bear right onto a connector road (Do not re-enter I-95). The connector road parallels the interstate and merges onto Admiral Street. Continue straight on Admiral Street to the end and turn right onto Iranistan Avenue. Continue south on Iranistan to a right turn onto Waldemere Avenue and into Seaside Park. Continue west onto Barnum Boulevard and follow to the end at a parking lot.

Fayerweather Island is connected to the parking lot by a stone breakwater. The Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse is visible on the southern tip of the island. A 20 minute hike along the breakwater and hiking trails leads to the lighthouse as well as the closest land view of the Penfield Reef Lighthouse about 2.3 miles south southwest. Bring insect repellant to combat the mosquitoes in season.
