The Block Island North Lighthouse Station was established in 1829 with twin towers on Sandy Point at the north end of Block Island. These lights and their 1837 replacements were washed to the sea in severe storms. An 1857 tower was built further inland to protect it from high seas but was destroyed by fire instead. The existing 1867 combination keeper's house and tower was designed to survive the ravages of nature that had destroyed the previous light. The two and a half story keeper's house is built of granite and has a brown cast iron lantern room on the roof. The architectural style is Victorian-Gothic revival and variations of the building plans were used for construction of five similar light stations on the Long Island Sound. The lighthouse was deactivated in 1973 and an automatic light was placed on a skeleton tower. The lighthouse was then acquired by the US Fish & Wildlife Service which maintains the north end of the island as a national wildlife refuge. In 1984 ownership was transferred to the Town of New Shoreham and following restoration work, the tower was relit in 1989. Continued restoration allowed for the opening of the first floor as a museum in 2003.
The Block Island North Lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and continues to be an active aid to navigation. The 55 foot tower displays a flashing white light every 5 seconds from a modern optic and is visible for 13 nautical miles.
The Block Island North Lighthouse is open seasonally to the public as the North Light Interpretive Center located on the restored first floor. The Museum is open daily mid-June to Labor Day 10 AM to 4 PM and Friday to Sunday after Labor Day until Columbus Day 10 AM to 4PM. The Museum is handicapped accessible and has a public restroom. Non-handicapped access to the site is by way of an approximate 1 mile walk on the beach through the national wildlife preserve.
DIRECTIONS: From the ferry landing at the Old Harbor, take Water Street north through the business District. Turn Left onto Dodge Street (westbound) and continue to the first four way intersection. Turn right onto Corn Neck Road (northbound). Continue about 3.75 miles on Corn Neck Road until it ends in a parking lot. The foot trail leads north west from the end of the parking lot along the beach.
