Lighthouse History

Concord Point Historical ImageThe Concord Point Lighthouse Station was established in 1827 with a 32 foot tower on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Also built of Port Deposit granite and covered with cement, a one story keeper's house was built across the street from the tower. The keeper's house was expanded to 2 stories in 1884 and then sold in 1920 when the lighthouse was electrified. Concord Point Lighthouse was deactivated by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1975 and is now managed by the City of Havre de Grace. Both the tower and the keeper's house have been restored by the Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse and are open to the public April to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM.

The Concord Point Lighthouse continues to be a private aid to navigation and attraction in a city waterfront park. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Lighthouse DigestFebruary 2003 Issue, The Steamboat Light by Richard Clayton. Following the War of 1812, the use of steamboats for shipping flourished on American rivers. In Havre de Grace, the point where the Susquehanna River steamboats turned into the Chesapeake to receive their cargo from ocean going vessels was marked with a light on Concord Point.
