Lighthouse History

Long Point Lighthouse USCGTo aid access to the busy Provincetown Harbor, the Long Point Light Station was established in 1827. The original light consisted of a 2 story wood framed keeper's house with a short octagonal lantern on the roof.  The original optic was in the form of 10 lamps and reflectors described as a two tiered Lewis Optic in 1838 and upgraded to a 6th order Fresnel lens in 1856. By 1873 the US Lighthouse Board reported that the station was in need of replacement and Congress authorized $13,000 for the work. The existing 38' brick tower as well as a new 1 1/2 story keeper's house and fog bell went into service in 1875 with a 5th order Fresnel lens. The lens was upgraded again in 1927 to a 4th order Fresnel lens. The station was automated in 1952 and received a modern optic. It was converted to solar power in 1981. The keeper's house and fog bell signal building have been removed and an automatic fog signal now sounds once every 15 seconds as needed.

The Long Point Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The square white, tapered brick lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation maintained by the US Coast Guard (optic & horn) and the Cape Cod Chapter which now has stewardship of the tower. The solar powered 300 mm optic displays a fixed green light visible for 8 nautical miles.

Braving 40 MPH winds and falling ladders, 9 volunteers from the New England Lighthouse Lovers teamed up with members of the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation to repaint the Long Point Lighthouse. Local Resources

The Long Point Lighthouse can be seen distantly from many points along the Provincetown waterfront as well as its’ near twin, the Wood End Lighthouse located about 2 ¾ miles to the East. The light is not open to the public but the grounds can be reached on foot by hiking the breakwater from Provincetown.  It’s recommended to time your hike with low tide as the breakwater may be flooded at high tide.
Directions: On Cape Cod take US Route 6 east to the end at Commercial Street (Rt 6A) in Provincetown.  Take Commercial Street to the end and park near the breakwater. Cross the breakwater to the sand bar.  Note the Wood End Lighthouse is about 3/4 miles to your right (east).  Turn left and continue west on the sand bar about 2 miles, (away from the Wood End Light) to the Long Point Lighthouse.
