Lighthouse History

Nauset USCGThe Nauset Beach Lighthouse Station was originally established as the Three Sisters Of Nauset in 1838. Three 15 foot tall brick towers were placed in a line 150 feet apart on a cliff giving a signal of three lights to Atlantic mariners. In 1892 the brick towers were replaced with three almost identical 22 foot tall wooden lighthouses. These replacement towers were placed 30 feet further inland due to erosion of the cliff. The original brick towers eventually fell into the sea. Two of the Sisters were deactivated and removed in 1911 when the cliff had now eroded to within 8 feet of the North Sister. The remaining Sister was moved back from the cliff and given a new characteristic of 3 white flashes every 10 seconds to replace the original 3 separate signals. In 1923, this remaining Sister was in poor condition and in need of replacement. The north tower at the Chatham Light Station had been deactivated when the Chatham South tower had its characteristic changed to a double flash every 10 seconds. This north tower was disassembled and rebuilt in the Town of Eastham to replace the remaining 1892 wooden light. The cliff erosion has continued and by 1996, the 1877 cast iron tower now known as the Nauset or Nauset Beach light was also in danger, only 35 feet from the edge of the bluff. The tower was then rescued by being moved 336 feet further inland by the Nauset Light Preservation Society. This non-profit preservation group had formed to save the light in 1993 when the Coast Guard announced that the light would be decommissioned and that there were no funds available for the government to move it.

The Nauset Beach Lighthouse received its now familiar red top in 1940 and its likeness appears on both the Massachusetts Cape Cod license plates and packages of Cape Cod Potato Chips. It continues to be a private aid to navigation owned by the National Park Service. The 48 foot tall white and red tower with a black lantern continues to guide mariners by displaying an alternating white and red light from a rotating aero-beacon.

Lighthouse DigestFebruary 2006 Issue, Nauset Light Gets A Sprucing Up by Jeremy D'Entremont. " If you're not familiar with Nauset Light in Eastham, Massachusetts, just check out the snack aisle at your local grocery store and you're likely to see its image. It's the one on the Cape Cod Potato Chip bags. It was a Cape Cod icon long before that happened, though, its familiar day mark colors, red on top and white on the bottom, and its red and white flashing light are an essential part of the local landscape for Cape residents and vacationers." In the Fall of 2005 this Cape Cod icon received an exterior restoration of the tower funded by the Nauset Light Preservation Society.
