Lighthouse History

USCG Photo

The Nobska Point Lighthouse Station was established in 1829 with a combination Keeper's House with a Lantern on the roof. The current tower and keeper's house were built in 1876 and were originally connected by a covered walkway. The light station is situated on a hill overlooking the Nantucket Sound that raises the focal plane of the 40 foot tower to 87 feet. The light still uses a 1888 vintage fourth order Fresnel Lens to display a flashing white light every 6 seconds. The light was automated in 1985.

The Nobska Point Lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The 40 foot tall white cast iron tower is lined with brick and is occasionally open to the public. The keeper's house and grounds are in active use as Coast Guard Housing but the area in front of the tower and outside the inner wooden fence are open to the public.

Lighthouse Digest MagazineOctober 2001 Issue, Change Of Command Makes History. For the first time, the change of command ceremony for the US Coast Guard Group Woods Hole was held at the Nobska Point Lighthouse. While all U.S. lighthouses with the exception of the Boston Lighthouse have been automated, the Coast Guard continues to utilize many of the keeper's houses for housing of personnel. In the case of the Nobska Point Lighthouse, the former commander of the Local Coast Guard Station Captain Russell Webster lived there with his family from 1998 to 2001. Lighthouse Digest magazine not only keeps the history of our lighthouses alive both in print and on line, but it is the best single source to keep current on all aspects of lighthouse preservation, news and events

The Nobska Point Lighthouse grounds are open to the public except for the portions around the keeper's house and out buildings that are still used by the U.S. Coast Guard. The restricted area is well marked by a white wooden fence extending from both sides of the tower's entry building and a small public parking area is located along the road. The USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 11-2 provides occasional open houses for the tower.
Directions: From State Route 28 in Falmouth, turn south west onto Locust St which then becomes Woods Hole Rd. Just on the outskirts of the Woods Hole business district turn left (south) onto Church Rd. Continue on Church Rd about 3/4 mile to Nobska Point where the road loops to the left. The Nobska Point Lighthouse and the small public parking area are on your left. The public is permitted past the white wooden fence and gate located at the parking area to approach the south side of the tower. All other fenced areas are restricted.
