Lighthouse History

Old Field Point USCGThe existing lighthouse at Old Field Point was built to replace a 30 foot stone tower established in 1823.  The Victorian-Gothic Revival 2 ½ story “church & steeple” style lighthouse was built of granite in 1868. This is one of the 5 lighthouses built on Long Island Sound in that year using the plans from the 1867 Block Island North light in Rhode Island.  The 4th order Fresnel lens from the original light (installed in 1855) was used in the 1868 tower until 1933 when the lighthouse was discontinued and the aid to navigation was placed on a skeleton tower.  Old Field Point Lighthouse was a “family station” in more than one way. Not only did the keeper live there with his or her family, but two successive generations of female keepers have tended the light. Elizabeth Smith was keeper from 1830 to 1856 followed by her daughter Mary Foster who served 1856 to 1869 (which included the transfer to the 1868 lighthouse). The lighthouse was used as an observation post during World War II as part of the Coastal Defense System. The Old Field Point light station has been owned by the Village of Old Field since 1935 and is now in use as the Village Hall.  The stone keeper’s house from the 1823 lighthouse still remains to the rear of the 1868 lighthouse and now houses the Village Constable.

The US Coast Guard returned the light to the tower in 1991 and the lighthouse/village hall remains an active aid to navigation.  Old Field Point Lighthouse displays alternating red and green flashes every 30 seconds as its lighting characteristic. The tower was originally white but is now painted black.  The remainder of the wood trim remains white making the Old Field Point Lighthouse distinctive from its neighboring twins at Plum Island (NY) and along the Connecticut coast of the Long Island Sound.
