The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Station was established in 1827 with a conical stone tower and a stone keeper's house. Apparently the lime mortar used in the construction of these structures was inferior necessitating the rebuilding of the tower in 1835. This new tower was built of rubblestone with a black cast iron lantern room and stands 38 feet tall. The stone keeper's house wasn't replaced until 1857 with the existing wood frame cottage. The fourth order Fresnel lens installed in 1856 was automated in 1934 and continues to give a white flash every 6 seconds. The fog bell was originally rung by hand. The station received a fog bell mounted on a one story red brick engine house in 1897. The external fog bell tower used to house the weights for the bell striking mechanism was destroyed by Hurricane Bob in 1992 and was replaced with a replica. The 1896 brick oil house still stands southeast of the keeper's house
The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation and attraction in a town waterfront park. The tower is licensed by the USCG to the American Lighthouse Foundation and is managed by the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Chapter. The grounds (with the exception of the tower) are owned and maintained by the Town of Bristol and the Fisherman's Museum was established in the keeper's house. The lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places
November 2006 Issue, Help Needed Now To Save Maine's Famous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse.
