Lighthouse History

Saybrook Breakwater USCGThe Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse Station was established, completed and lit in 1886. This is the original tower, built from cast iron plates and lined with brick. The lighthouse was prefabricated by the G.W. & F. Smith Iron Company in Boston, Massachusetts and then assembled on site. The white lighthouse sits atop a 32 foot tall brown cast iron Caisson that was sunk into the Long Island Sounds' bed at the entrance to the Connecticut River. The U.S. Coast Guard keepers were relieved and the station was automated in 1959. The original Fifth Order Fresnel lens was replaced with a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens and the lighthouse now displays a modern optic since 1988. Originally equiped with a fog bell, it was replaced by a large air diaphragm fog horn in 1939. The current fog signal is an electric horn sounding a single blast every 30 seconds when needed

The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Placesand continues to be an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse is powered by solar panels and batteries and provides a flashing green light every 6 seconds

Old Saybrook To Be Excessed - Connecticut's Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse, the one that appears on the state's license plate, is being declared excess property under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Early reports are that the town of Old Saybrook wants town the 1886 structure. Please go to the Lighthouse Digest Magazine Archives to read this article. Lighthouse Digest magazine not only keeps the history of our lighthouses alive both in print and on line, but it is the best single source to keep current on all aspects of lighthouse preservation, news and events.

The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse can be viewed distantly from State Route 154. From US Route 1 turn southbound on State Route 154 - Main Street into the Old Saybrook downtown business district. After passing the Old Saybrook Fire House, Main Street curves to the left (eastbound) and turns into School Street. At the end of School Street turn right onto Bridge Street in the Saybrook Point area. Continue southbound on School Street and look for the Lynde Point Lighthouse to the southeast while crossing the cove. Continue southbound on Bridge Street which becomes Maple Street (and is still State Route 154). When you bear right and the Long Island Sound is on your left, find a safe place to stop on a side road (there is a No Parking Zone along the sea wall). The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is visible at a distance due east of the seawall.

Connecticut River ToursThe best view of the Saybrook Breakwater as well as the Lynde Point Lighthouses is from the Connecticut River. A very good and convenient tour can be arranged on the Heron, a 26 foot Oldport Motor Launch operated by Captain Jeremy Soboleski of Connecticut River Tours in Old Saybrook. The tour departs from the Dock and Dine Resteraunt Dock on Saybrook Point adjacent to a town park with convenient public parking and facilities. The boat tour provides excellent water views of both historic light stations including a photo opportunity to photograph both lights in the same frame!
