My Screw Pile Lighthouses are working replicas of the off shore lighthouses that started replacing less effective on shore lights of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays in the 1850's. These relatively inexpensive structures could be located directly over navigational hazards providing a more effective warning than shore lights that were at a distance to the shipping channels. Their spidery legs had auger tips that where screwed into the bottom of the bay and anchored the wood frame structures.
My highly detailed replicas are built from either cedar or pine wood with copper legs and an bronze exterior light fixture. My first replica was of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse which holds the distinction of being the only screwpile lighthouse in the country to still be in active use at its original location. My most recent addition is the Hatteras Beacon which served as the front range light to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
