Sheffield Island is named for Captain Robert Sheffield who bought the Island off shore of Norwalk in 1804. The original aid to navigation was established with a simple wooden tower in 1826. The one and half story granite keeper’s house still remains from the original light station. The existing lighthouse was completed in 1868 using a variation of the Block Island North Light plans as were 4 other Long Island Sound lighthouses (Great Captain Island & Morgan Point in Connecticut and Old Field Point and Plum Island in New York). The 1868 lighthouse is a 2 and a half story gneiss stone keeper’s house with a cast iron tower and lantern room on top totaling 46 feet in height. The 4th order Fresnel lens from the original tower was reused in the new light until it too was replaced by the Greens Ledge Lighthouse in 1902. In 1986, the abandoned and abused Sheffield Island Lighthouse was sold to the Norwalk Seaport Association along with 4 acres, the old keeper’s house and a 1927 wood cottage. The remainder of the island is now part of the Stewart B McKinney National Wildlife Refuge. The Sheffield Island Lighthouse has been lovingly restored and the $540,000.00 Mortgage was paid off in 2000. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and although restored, has not been re-lit as the Greens Ledge Lighthouse remains the active aid to navigation. |

The Sheffield Island Lighthouse is distantly visible from many points along the shore but is best viewed by boat or in person. The lighthouse is open to the public and the Norwalk Seaport Association provides 2 hour narrated boat tours aboard the 44 passenger Seaport Islander. The tour includes an hour on the island with a full tour of 1868 lighthouse. Directions: The Seaport Islander sails from the Hope Dock next to the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium in South Norwalk. Take I95 exit 14(Northbound) for South Norwalk/Maritime Aquarium. Following the signs for the Maritime Aquarium take Reed Avenue to a right turn on West Avenue (eastbound) to a left fork onto North Main Street. Turn left at the next traffic light onto Ann Street. Turn right onto North Water Street and park. There is limited street parking but the City of Norwalk operates a parking garage opposite the Maritime Aquarium. The Hope Dock is located on the river just east of the Aquarium (to your right as you exit the garage facing the Aquarium).
