Lighthouse History

Stage Harbor Lighthouse HistoricalThe Stage Harbor Light Station was authorized in 1876 and by 1880 the 36 foot cast iron plate tower was in service.  Located on Harding Beach, a barrier sand bar at the entrance of Stage Harbor from the Nantucket Sound, the lighthouse served commercial fishermen making the harbor in foul weather or during the “Chatham Fog”, a common summer occurrence where the region becomes fogged in at night.  Similar in construction to numerous lighthouses built in the late 1870’s to 1880’s including four also on Cape Cod: Chatham Twin Lights (the north tower is now at Nauset Beach), Nobska Point and Race Point, the Stage Harbor tower used pre-fabricated cast iron plates assembled on site and lined with brick.  A wooden 2 story keeper’s house was connected to the tower by a short enclosed walkway. The fixed white light visible for 12 nautical miles was provided by a 4th order Fresnel lens until 1933 when the  station was decommissioned and replaced by a skeleton tower just off shore at the entrance of the harbor. The lantern room was removed from the windows up and the tower capped.  The now excess light station was sold into private ownership where it has remained ever since.

The impeccably kept keeper’s house and headless tower continue to be used as a seasonal residence where the lifestyle remains much as it was when they were in service; devoid of air conditioning, electricity and many other modern conveniences.

Lighthouse DigestOctober 2006 Issue, Lighthouse Paints, Colors, etc. by Jim Claflin. "Stage Harbor Light Station in Chatham, Mass. was decommissioned before the 1938 change-over and thus never had the trim color changed to green. Today the original family that purchased the property in the 1930’s still lovingly maintains the structure in the original white with red lead color trim." Lighthouse Digest magazine not only keeps the history of our lighthouses alive both in print and on line, but it is the best single source to keep current on all aspects of lighthouse preservation, news and events.

The Stage Harbor Lighthouse is visible from Sears Point in south Chatham.
Directions: From the traffic rotary in Chatham (intersection with Route 28 Main Street, Route 28 Old Harbor Road, Main Street and Stage Harbor Road) turn south west onto Stage Harbor Road. Turn right onto Cedar Street and continue to the end.  Turn left onto Battlefield Road to a four way intersection.  Turn right onto Sears Road. Take Sears Road south to the end at the water.  The Stage Harbor Lighthouse will be visible to the south across Oyster Pond.  Closer views can be had by hiking over the sand dunes from the Hardings Beach parking lot.  This one mile (each way) hike on the beach or inland dune trails will bring you to the entrance to Stage Harbor and the former light station.  The private property boundaries are clearly marked, please be careful not to trespass or disturb the residents.  Excellent views of the station can be had from the fence line and beyond, photographers should consider bringing a telephoto lens for close-ups.
