Lighthouse History

Stamford Harbor USCGTo mark an obstruction on the approach to the Stamford Harbor known as Chatham Rock, the existing pre-fabricated caisson lighthouse was placed into service in 1882.  The cast iron plates used in construction of the 60 foot tower were made in Boston and assembled on site atop a 28 foot caisson. The lighthouse equipped with a 4th order Fresnel lens served until 1953 when it was destaffed and automated with a battery powered modern optic.  The lighthouse was auctioned in 1953 and a former mayor of Stamford bought it for $1,000.00 and donated it to the city hoping it would be refurbished and preserved by the city.  Unfortunately that did not occur and the US government reclaimed ownership in 1964.  It was sold again in 1967, this time to a local power company that intended to build a generation plant on shore and use the lighthouse for a discharge site.  The power plant also did not occur and the lighthouse was auctioned again in 1983.  A New York banker bought it for $230,000.00 and renovated it as living quarters.  In 1996 the privately owned “home” with a 360 degree view of the Long Island Sound was on the market for $1.1 Million.  Following the death of the banker in 1998, the lighthouse was taken off the market and as of 2007 was still owned by the family.

The white cast iron tower sitting on a red caisson is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Stamford Harbor Lighthouse remains a private aid to navigation.
