Lighthouse History

Three Sisters USCGThe Three Sisters of Nauset Light Station was established in 1838. Three 15 foot tall brick towers were placed in a line 150 feet apart on a cliff giving a signal of three lights to Atlantic mariners. In 1892 the brick towers were replaced with three almost identical 22 foot tall wooden lighthouses. These replacement towers were placed 30 feet further inland due to erosion of the cliff. The original brick towers eventually fell into the sea. To conserve oil, two of the Sisters were deactivated and removed in 1911 when the cliff had now eroded to within 8 feet of the North Sister. The remaining middle Sister was moved back from the cliff and given a new characteristic of 3 white flashes every 10 seconds to replace the original 3 separate signals. In 1923, this remaining Sister now known as the "Beacon" was in poor condition and in need of replacement. The north tower at the Chatham Light Station which had been deactivated (when the Chatham South tower had its characteristic changed to a double flash every 10 seconds) was pressed into service. This north tower was disassembled and rebuilt in the Town of Eastham to replace the remaining 1892 wooden light and is now known as the Nauset Beach lighthouse.

In 1918, the north and south Sisters were sold and moved. They moved again to Cable Road in 1920, now as additions to a small beach cottage. When the Beacon (middle Sister) was replaced in 1923 it was moved to the Nauset Beach parking area and attached to a one story house. In 1957 it was sold (without the lantern) and moved again, becoming a beach cottage and then a hamburger stand. The National Park Service purchased the north and south towers in 1965 and obtained the Beacon in 1985. The three towers received a $510,000 renovation and were moved to their current locations on Cable Road in 1989. The three Sisters of Nauset are listed in the National Register of Historic places and remain as an attraction in the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Lighthouse Dogest MagazineJanuary 2002 Issue, The Three Sisters by Don Sparrow. The nickname of the Three Sisters has been attributed to their resemblance to three girls in white dresses when viewed from passing ships (don't forget these folks spent a lot of time at sea). It's also said that they were named after three actual sisters; Sarah, Laura and Abbie Hatch. Please go to the Lighthouse Digest Magazine Archives to read this article. Lighthouse Digest magazine not only keeps the history of our lighthouses alive both in print and on line, but it is the best single source to keep current on all aspects of lighthouse preservation, news and events.
