The first aid to navigation to mark the Wood End Bar was a daymark erected in 1864. The existing 39 foot brick lighthouse replaced that daymark in 1872. The station originally included a 1.5 story wooden keeper’s house. A new wooden dwelling, oil house and shed were added 1896. A pyramidal bell tower soon followed in 1902. The light was automated in 1961 and the keeper’s house and shed were removed. The original 5th order lens was then replaced with a modern optic and the fog bell was replaced with a fog horn that sounds every 30 seconds when needed. The station was converted to solar power in 1981. A volunteer work party organized by the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation repainted the lighthouse in 2000.
The Wood End Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The square white, tapered brick lighthouse continues to be an active aid to navigation maintained by the US Coast Guard (optic & horn) and the Cape Cod Chapter which now has stewardship of the tower. The Vega VRB-25 optic displays a red flash every 10 seconds visible for 13 nautical miles.

This time they repainted the tower and oil house at Wood End Light, near Provincetown on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Please go to the Lighthouse Digest Magazine Archives for the full article. The Wood End Lighthouse can be seen distantly from many points along the Provincetown waterfront as well as its’ near twin, the Long Point Lighthouse located about 2 ¾ miles to the west. The light is not open to the public but the grounds can be reached on foot by hiking the breakwater from Provincetown. It’s recommended to time your hike with low tide as the breakwater may be flooded at high tide.
Directions: On Cape Cod take US Route 6 east to the end at Commercial Street (Rt 6A) in Provincetown. Take Commercial Street to the end and park near the breakwater. Cross the breakwater to the sand bar. Note the Long Point lighthouse is about 2 miles to your left (west). Turn right and continue east on the sand bar about ¾ mile, (away from the Long Point Light) to the Wood End Lighthouse.
